Low GI: Lower glycemic index
Health-conscious
consumers – particularly in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa –o have already established
eating habits that favor foods with a low glycemic index (low GI). The nutritional trend is also
becoming evident in the USA and Europe where consumers in these regions are also showing more and
more interest in products with a low glycemic index.
The glycemic index is a measure of the effect of carbohydrates on blood sugar. A low glycemic index results in only moderate increases and decreases in blood sugar levels, keeping them at a constant level longer. Major fluctuations in blood sugar, which can promote obesity and Type II diabetes, can be avoided by eating foods with a low glycemic index.
The Glyx Institute in Frankfurt/Main issues a GI seal for nutritionally sound foods and beverages that have a low glycemic index. This is intended to make it easier for consumers to choose foods that are healthy.
Up until now, the low-GI assortment was made up mainly of foods. Now WILD is also offering its customers in the beverage industry similar products. The range of products includes various low-GI formulations for near-water drinks. They contain Fruit Up® natural fructose as well as water-soluble and taste-free dietary fiber.
